Tim Tansel Powder Horn
The Tansel Family - Powder Horn Makers.
In 1798 Frances Tansel migrated west settling near Georgetown, Scott County Kentucky. Tax records indicate he was a farmer thus making powder horns supplemented his income during slack periods. Frances passed these skills to at least two of his sons, John and Timothy. These unique powderhorns are very recognizable almost always having a federal eagle with spread wings, shield on its breast, holding arrows and an olive branch in its claws. Other common themes include hunting dogs chasing deer, hunters shooting flintlock rifles or bow and arrows, along with distinctive floral designs with curled tendrils and “swag and tassel” like borders at the spout end and butt.
Offered is a very nice example signed by Tim Tansel, probably made during the 1840's. Less than 1/4 of his horns are signed making this rarer than most. It is in great condition for its age, having all of its tip and the original butt, both of which so often have been replaced. It has a nice double curve which is well illustrated in the last photo, good color and patina.
